The "New Castle"
Thanks to its mild climate, Gerzensee is not only a privileged farming village. For centuries, it has also been a popular summer destination for members of the Bernese aristocracy who referred to Gerzensee as the "Bernese Riviera" or the "Pearl of Bernerland." The history of the "New Castle" goes back to 1700 when Samuel Morlot raised a belvedere in French Baroque style. Over the centuries, many families owned the property, enlarged and modified the manor house, and cultivated the park. The Swiss National Bank acquired the estate in 1980 and four years later, established the Study Center Gerzensee. The first courses took place in 1986. A brochure (in German) published on the occasion of the Study Center's 25th anniversary contains detailed information about the history of the "New Castle."
